THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THE JAZZ SALON AND LIVE JAZZ IN 2020!

What a year it has been! Between the election, the pandemic, and the limping economy, it’s been one that will hard to forget. But most of us have gotten through it, and we’ll persevere until times are better. Until then, jazz is dependable therapy –  beautiful songs, by artists reaching for joy.

Our most recent live concert, featuring the incomparable singer Barbara Morrison, and sax great Rickey Woodard, from 12/17, will remain posted until the end of the year. Your ticket entitles you to restream at your convenience. Use the Main Menu above to click on “Jazz Salon Live Streams: West Coast”, and enter the password. To purchase a ticket, click on “Jazz Salon Live Stream Tickets”.

FREE HOLIDAY CONCERTS

As a “thank you” for your support, I have added two new past concerts to the two past concerts I posted for Christmas.

All four of these holiday concerts can be viewed in the video boxes below.

We have exciting plans for The Jazz Salon Live Streams starting in January. Please stay tuned. If you are not on our mailing list, that can be remedied by clicking on the “Jazz Salon Live Stream Tickets” link on the main menu, scrolling down, and entering your information.

Stay safe, and thank you for your support.

LEGENDARY SINGER MARY STALLINGS W RICKEY WOODARD

Discovered at 15 by Dizzy Gillespie, Mary Stallings went on to sing with Dizzy, Louis Jordan, Ben Webster and Cal Tjader, before joining the renown Basie Band. In her first Jazz Salon appearance, Mary was backed by the great sax player, Rickey Woodard, with Nolan Shaheed on trumpet, Mark Massey on piano, and Roy McCurdy on drums!

ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM AND TEKA!

One of music’s most melodic and harmonic composers, Antonio Carlos Jobim, along with guitarist Joao Gilberto, creating the musical language of Bossa Nova. It is so difficult in the U.S. to hear this music authentically played. Here, the beautiful Brazilian singer/guitarist, Teka, collaborates with fellow Brazilian, percussionist Clarice Cast, sax player Robert Kyle and pianist Mark Massey for an unforgettable night of Jobim favorites. Harmonica virtuoso Tim Welvaars adds the the excitement!

TEMPTATIONS/DRIFTERS LEAD SINGER, LOUIS PRICE, JOINS MARIA HOWELL AND THE BAND!

Highlight of the first half of this August 2019 evening concert on the bay was listening to Maria Howell’s great singing, and admiring drummer Clayton Cameron’s demonstration of virtuoso brushwork, chronicling the history of tap dancing! Then Temptations/Drifters lead singer, Louis Price, stepped in. Wow! It was so fun to play those Motown hits, and see a couple of hundred people dancing on the beach!

THE GREAT MARY STALLINGS BACKED BY ALL-STAR BAND!

In September of 2019, warming up for a concert at UCLA the next day, the classic jazz singer, Mary Stallings, was backed by a rare and exciting combo. Dayna Stephens flew out from NYC to play exquisite sax, Nick Mancini burned up the vibes, “Tonight Show” guitarist, Tom Rizzo was wonderfully inventive and original, young Paul Cornish brought his chops to the piano, and another young musician, Keven Van den Elzen, kept us together on drums!

LLEW MATTHEWS AND PLAS JOHNSON 2013 HOLIDAY CONCERT!

Beloved pianist, Llew Matthews, was Nancy Wilson’s accompanist  for the last 20 years of her career, and one of the sweetest people to ever grace L.A. stages. At this 2013 holiday concert he plays with the “Pink Panther” himself, sax great Plas Johnson, with the legendary Roy McCurdy on drums, and Basie and Stevie Wonder alumnus, Nolan Shaheed, on trumpet. Gina Suputo contributes several swinging vocals.

TRIBUTE TO JEFF CLAYTON

The Clayton family is our West Coast Marsalis jazz family.  Bassist John, and alto sax player Jeff Clayton led the great Clayton-Hamilton Band, and John’s son, Gerald, continues the tradition.

John and Jeff have been loved by everyone they played with, for their warmth and positive attitude, as well as their artistry.

We lost Jeff Clayton on December 17, after a long struggle with cancer.

I had the privilege of playing a concert alongside Jeff Clayton, Tamir Hendelman, and Clayton Cameron, backing the great singer, Mary Stallings, back in 2018. I’m posting this, for your enjoyment, with deep gratitude.

Just listening to the 1st Mary concert, of course, she is perfection but Ricky was so too and Nolan not far behind. Those two are great treasures’. Thank you for this wonderful concert, not forgotten.
